New Books Will Help School's Support for the Environment

To mark the start of Architecture Week (15-24 June) Our Lady's Catholic Primary School in Corby, Northamptonshire, has been presented with a number of books on architecture and the environment by Tom Lyons, who is an architect and partner at GSS Architecture.

Tom explained, "The theme of Architecture Week is 'How green is our space?' and is based around the environment and sustainability. The children at Our Lady's have been encouraged to take an interest in design and the environment, and GSS Architecture thought that providing a selection of new books for their library would help to continue this in the future. If our world is to survive in the long term we all have to start taking the environment much more seriously, and what better place to start than with our children."

Tom has given several talks on the subject to the pupils at the school, who last year designed and made several model homes for a competition involving a number of schools in Northamptonshire.

Head teacher John Duggan said, "We believe in helping our children to think about the world around them and also to understand the importance of good design. We've worked closely with several local artists who have come into the school to talk to the children about their work, and helped them to participate in making artworks. These new books will be a very welcome addition to our teaching resources."

GSS Architecture has undertaken a number of schools projects for both the Catholic Dioceses of Northampton and East Anglia, including new primary schools in Northampton and Milton Keynes and multi-million pound campus redevelopments at secondary schools in Northampton and Peterborough.
